GAINWARD launches GeForce RTX 4080 Phoenix graphics card

Anthony Garreffa | Dec 6, 2022 6:36 PM CST

GAINWARD impressed me with their mighty GeForce RTX 4090 Phantom "GS" graphics card that I reviewed during the GeForce RTX 4090 launch insanity, but now the company is launching its new custom GeForce RTX 4080 Phoenix "GS" graphics card.

GAINWARD's new GeForce RTX 4080 Phoenix "GS" graphics card

The new GAINWARD GeForce RTX 4080 Phoenix "GS" graphics card is another "Golden Sample" hence the "GS" branding, with higher GPU clock speeds out of the box, a monster triple-fan cooler and 3.1-slot design. Inside, it's like every other NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card: the AD103 GPU with 9272 CUDA cores, joined by 16GB of GDDR6X memory clocked at 22.4Gbps on a 256-bit memory bus.

GAINWARD is factory overclocking its custom GeForce RTX 4080 Phoenix "GS" graphics card, with a 4.1% factory overclock out of the box boosting the GPU clock speed from 2508MHz to 2610MHz, but I'm sure you'll be squeezing much more out of that AD103 GPU with some manual overclocking and tweaking.

Scalpers get screwed: holding the bag with overpriced GeForce RTX 4080 cards

Anthony Garreffa | Dec 5, 2022 9:21 PM CST

Oh man, like anyone couldn't see this coming... but scalpers have just been screwed, buying boxes and boxes of NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards and not being able to sell them. But, the story gets worse for the scalers.

The overpriced NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card hasn't been well received by gamers, even though it offers some fantastic performance, the flagship GeForce RTX 4090 is a much, much better purchase. Scalpers thought they would make some quick bucks buying the cards and re-selling them, but noooope.

One of the scalpers purchased six GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards at launch, but now that the cards are sitting at around the MSRP -- $1199 or so -- they can't get rid of them. Not only that, but Moore's Law is Dead has noticed that some of the big retailers are removing the refund option for their GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards, so the scalpers are stuck with bags of GeForce RTX 4080 graphics cards that they probably won't be able to sell for profits.

AMD will be unleashing its next-gen RDNA 3-based Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics cards on December 13, with pricing of $999 and $899, respectively. But now we have some custom models appearing in China for pre-order for much, much higher prices.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX pre-orders in China arrive: costs up to $1600 05

ITHome rerpots that one Chinese outlet has listed the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics card for 12999 RMB (which converts to around $1850), while the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card is listed for 999 RMB (which converts to around $1425). These prices are for AMD's own in-house Radeon RX 7900 series reference graphics cards.

Moving onto the custom models, a Chinese retailer has PowerColor's beasty Radeon RX 7900 XTX Red Devil graphics card for $1622 or so, which is a huge $622 premium over the $999 MSRP on the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference graphics card. It's also a chunky $230+ premium over PowerColor's second-best Radeon RX 7900 XTX Hellhound graphics card.

NVIDIA: our new GeForce RTX 4090 sold out in 2 weeks, normalized by 1H 2023

Anthony Garreffa | Dec 5, 2022 5:41 PM CST

NVIDIA has come out discussing the successful sales of its flagship GeForce RTX 4090 "Ada Lovelace" graphics cards, saying that the company sold out of its AD102-based GeForce RTX 4090 in just a couple of weeks.

NVIDIA: our new GeForce RTX 4090 sold out in 2 weeks, normalized by 1H 2023 108

The news is coming from NVIDIA's Chief Financial Officer, Colette Kress, who said that the company had been under-shipping gaming GPUs for a while now, something she said during the Credit Suisse 26th Annual Tech conference. The market has been filled with used GPUs from the now-kinda-dead crypto mining insanity, with prices dropping on both used and new graphics cards -- and at both retail and second-hand prices.

NVIDIA has kick-started the refresh of its older-gen GeForce RTX 30 "Ampere" series GPUs with new graphics cards based on the Ampere GPU architecture, as well as stabilizing its channel inventory and backlog. Not only that, but the company has been incentivizing sales with free games and more.

The next-gen Samsung GDDR7 memory will feature PAM3 (Pulse-Amplitude Modulation) signaling, with 25% more efficiency over NRZ (Non-Return to Zero), which is used inside of the current-gen GDDR6 memory standard. Another huge benefit of Samsung's next-gen GDDR7 memory is it will rock bandwidth of up to 36Gbps, which is a huge jump over the 18Gbps (double) that we see inside of current-gen GPUs.

AMD's next-gen RDNA 3-based Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs will use 20Gbps GDDR6 memory, while NVIDIA is still tapping Micron's high-end GDDR6X memory across its previous-gen GeForce RTX 30 series "Ampere" GPUs and current-gen GeForce RTX 40 "Ada Lovelace" GPUs.
